Effect of Planting Time and Pinching on Aspects of Axillary Bud Abortion in Branchless Chrysanthemums (Dendranthema grandiflorum Kitamura)

Abstract
The basic expression of branchlessness in chrysanthemums were investigated. The number of axillary buds set on lateral shoot in branchless chrysanthemum was the highest by 29.8 and 35.0 per shoot when winter sucker was planted and pinched in December. More strong expression of branchlessness was observed as the planting time was delayed to June. The number of axillary bud was only 3.6-4.7 when the rooted cuttings planted in June were pinched. Axillary buds set on lateral shoots developed after pinching were observed only in the leaf axils around the base. Axillary bud was initiated on almost all axils of suckers developed from underground tissues even during and after June when the branchlessness of shoot was strongly expressed. But the axillary buds were aborted as shoots emerge upground. Under high temperature (maximum day temp. : about 45¡É ) in August, some axillary buds were formed in leaf axil of shoot tip. More than 12 axillary buds were formed on rosette plants developed in autumn after high temperature. Axillary buds were aborted in even some standard (branching) cultivars during high temperature season.
